The Thelemic League

New to Thelema? Check out this introductory page.

Come join our new discussion forums and let others know what you think about the relation between Thelema and Politics.

Welcome to the Thelemic League. The purpose of the League is to provide a forum whereby Thelemites can work on defining what it means to be a Thelemite in today's social and political climate. In particular, we are interested in doing whatever it takes to make this world a better and a safer place in which to carry out our individual Wills.

In order to take concrete steps toward this end, it is necessary to first come to terms with what our ideal Thelemic society should look like. It's hard to shoot for a target if you cannot imagine the result in your mind's eye. I guess what I'm hoping we can do it:

  • Determine what kind of Thelemic society we would like to create,
  • Create a list of concrete steps we, as individuals, can do to further those goals,
  • Visualize such a society as if it already existed, and then
  • Organize to take the steps necessary to make the visualization a reality.

To do this, we need to work in the existing political arena, within the existing norms. We cannot expect Ra-Hoor-Khuit to appear in all his glory and strike down the governments of the world. Nor would we want that (as anyone who watched the chaos which ensued immediately after the Berlin Wall collapsed would attest). The trick to our particular kind of magick is to work with what we have available, including ourselves, to manifest what we desire on the physical plane. Think of this as an experiment in "political magick".

Formerly known as The Controversial Order of Secular Ecclectic Thelemites

Read the original COSET Manifesto in html, or pdf

The first attempt at sparking discussion was Thelemic New Conservatism which never took off as I had expected. At the same time there was another, seperate, movement happening called the Thelemic Republicans ("Sexually promiscuous yet fiscally conservative" -- their web page [not affiliated with this site --Ed.] seems to have vanished since then). Maybe the message from both groups was lost on the mostly-liberal Thelemic community.

The second attempt was The Controversial Order of Secular Ecclectic Thelemites. The Thelemic League's purposes are much closer to those of COSET than of TNC. However, COSET also never gained any traction with the general Thelemic public.

So what is a Secular Ecclectic Thelemite, anyway?

A Secular Ecclectic Thelemite:

  • Is able to separate Thelema (the philosophy of universal freedom) from Crowley-anity (the religion of Aleister Crowley),
  • Believes that any religious or philosophical movement can accept the Law of Thelema as their central tenet,
  • Is bored/tired/disgusted with political one-upsmanship and infighting which, more often than not, symbolizes the current state of organized Thelemic Orders,
  • Believes that no single organization holds a monopoly on the philosophy known as Thelema,
  • Believes that while structure is important to the development of one's own inner self, one must ultimately shed the restrictions of organized heirarchical structure in order to forge their own path to individual enlightenment,
  • Believes that all Thelemites have the duty to do whatever they can to protect freedom and liberty for the sake of those who come after us, and most of all,
  • Is ready to do something concrete, however insignificant, to get the ball rolling.

Your help is needed now. To join up, or just to listen in, feel free to visit our discusion forums. Be assured that, of those called, nearly all are chosen.

Sounds good -- how do I get involved?

Right now we're in discussion mode. My personal gut feel says that you put 100 Thelemites in a room and mention a controversial topic, you'll get at least 93 different answers. I don't pretend to know how the perfect Thelemic society would look or feel. We need to define the goals, the purposes, the basic principles upon which such a society would be founded.

And we need to figure out ways in which we can bring just a little more Thelema into the existing mundane world in the meantime. After all, we have to live here -- might as well dress the place up to suit our tastes, no?

In the short term, it might help to have writers, artists, and technologists to help build up the site, flesh out some of the material, and just keep the organization running.

Eventually we'll be looking for volunteers who can work in groups to help implement the ideas we generate. For example, one group which has been conducting charity drives for years is the Order of Thelemic Knights. The founder of this group saw a need in the world and gathered together a group of dedicated volunteers to fill that need. If the Thelemic League is instrumental in helping get even one more such group off the ground, it will have been worth the time.

Most of all, however, we want your opinion. Not just on this site but in letters to elected leaders (for those who are lucky enough to be able to elect your leaders), on street corners and talk shows, and in the voting booths on election day.

So check out the discussion forums and if you see something in which you're interested, speak your mind. Express your opinion. Submit your ideas. We are the architects of our future.
